We all look forward to a little time off to relax and have fun over the summer, but it is important for your student not to lose those skills they have worked so hard to build up over the school year! Here are a few tips to help keep your student on track throughout the summer so that the transition back to school in the fall will go smoothly and they will be ready for the next step in their academic journey!
- Read, Read, Read! - Your child should be reading different types of materials all throughout the summer. They can be books or blogs for fun, informational material about a new or favorite hobby, or even menus and brochures at the many fun places you will visit over the summer! Fun Idea - Have your student and their friends all read the same book, then let them have a "book club" themed sleepover to discuss what they read!
- Speak with your child all throughout the summer about topics related to school - what they are looking forward to, what they are nervous about, etc. to keep the idea of school always in play and to let them know you care about school and their transition back to school after the summer.
- Try to keep a routine - this may be difficult in the summer months with traveling and varying hours due to summer activities, but it is still important to keep a relatively consistent routine so the transition back is not so difficult!
- We know students are going to spend a significant amount of time with their devices - so put them to good use! These are just a few examples of some educational sites that your child will enjoy and will help them keep up their skills: MobyMax, Cool Math, Prodigy Math, Whyville, Book Adventure, FreeRice.com, Artopia, Stage'D, GeoEdu, and freedocumentaries.org - also, look under the resources tab to find more fun summer sites!
- HAVE FUN and SPEND TIME TOGETHER!
